L’Elisir d’Amore at Mariinsky Theatre

On 24, 25 and 27 January and 8 February the Mariinsky Theatre will be staging the premiere of Gaetano Donizetti’s “melodramma giocoso”L’elisir d’amore. On 24 January the performance will feature Anna Netrebko (Adina) and Erwin Schrott (Dulcamara). On 27 January the role of Adina will also be performed by Anna Netrebko.

The Mariinsky Theatre has staged Donizetti’s comic opera for the first time in recent history (the opera has previously been staged on three occasions by the St Petersburg Imperial Theatres in the 19th century). The theatre chose renowned French stage director Laurent Pelly and designer Chantal Thomas to mount this version, a co-production of the Opéra de Paris and the Royal Opera House in London. Pelly and Thomas’ L’elisir d’amore has been acclaimed as one of the greatest European productions ever.

The roles are being rehearsed by: Zhanna Dombrovskaya, Oxana Shilova, Lyudmila Dudinova and Karina Chepurnova (Adina); Yevgeny Akimov, Sergei Skorokhodov, Dmitry Voropaev and Nikolai Yemtsov (Nemorino); Vladimir Moroz, Vladislav Sulimsky and Viktor Korotich (Belcore); Andrei Serov, Vladimir Felyauer and Nikolai Kamensky as Dulcamara; and Svetlana Kisileva, Elena Ushakova and Larisa Yelina as Giannetta. The Mariinsky Theatre premiere will be conducted by Luciano di Martino. The musical preparation for the performance has been supervised by Irina Soboleva and the Principal Chorus Master is Andrei Petrenko.

Christian Räth, Stage Director of the Mariinsky Theatre production, said that “The plot unfolds in the 1960s: this brings the opera closer to us without distorting its ideas. I think that people of any age have always been delighted at new ideas that could magically alter their lives. One of the protagonists – Dulcamara – is selling a drink that makes people fall in love. Today we can see the same thing – on the internet, on TV, in newspapers – everywhere we can see things that purport to make our lives easier.”

Staatsoper Hamburg – La Traviata

Es ist schon erstaunlich, dass eine Inszenierung auch bei der 249.Aufführung und nach 35 Jahren mit so viel Erfolg und solcher Klasse auf dem Spielplan steht und auch für die Ehefrau und mich war es die 4.Aufführung und die erste davon war auch gleichzeitig unser erster gemeinsamer Besuch in diesem Haus und auch das liegt 30 Jahre zurück. Also stand große Oper an diesem Abend auf dem Programm und enttäuscht wurden wir nicht.

Die Regie von Folke Abenius ist schlicht, logisch und spannend. Konsequent wird das Milieu, seine feine Gesellschaft mit dem maßlosen Vergnügen und die leidende und endlich lieben dürfende Violetta gezeigt. Aus Standesgründen soll Alfredo auf sie verzichten. Ach wie oft lasen wir von ähnlichen Problemen bei den Royals und all den anderen unbekannten Zeitgenossen. So aktuell kann Oper sein. Die Bühnenbilder von Toni Businger sind berauschend schön: Ballsaal im Bild 1 und 3 mit ach so viel Pomp, goldgelbem Licht und der bis ins kleinste Detail ausgestatteten Szenerie. Schlicht ist dagegen das Landhaus und düster, fast erdrückend eng das Dachzimmer, sparsam möbliert zum Tod der Titelheldin. Die prunkvollen Kostüme schuf Hans-Günter Willerscheidt. Rauschende Abendgarderobe der Gäste, Violetta erst im prachtvollen Abendkleid, dann bäuerlich bieder und wieder so wunderschön in rot-schwarzer Robe, ein Hauch von Erotik zog auf. Am Ende folgt logischerweise ein dezentes weißes Nachthemd.

Und diese Violetta, ein Traum in Ausstrahlung und Stimme, war mit der aus Lettland stammenden Marina Rebeka besetzt. Kritik ist sinnlos, einfach nur ansehen, anhören und genießen. Ihr zur Seite stand der Koreaner Hoyoon Chung mit phasenweise leichten Konditionsmängeln. Für das fast Untergehen im ersten Duett bei einer so dominanten Partnerin, versuchte er am Schluss sich zu revanchieren, allerdings zwecklos. Vittorio Vitelli wirkte in der Vaterrolle einerseits noch recht jung, was durch Vollbart und Gehstock neutralisiert und auf alt getrimmt wurde. Warum nur müssen Väter solch junger Menschen nur so hergerichtet werden? Meine Kinder sind fast genauso alt und ich laufe doch auch nicht wie mein eigener Opa durchs Gelände. Der frische und ausdrucksstarke Bariton sorgte für enorme Spannung und ein herrliches „Di Provenza“ war einer der musikalischen Höhepunkte. Die kleineren Partien waren wie üblich mit Kräften des Hauses gut besetzt. Und der Chor, von Florian Csizmadia einstudiert, zeigte nicht nur stimmliche Qualität. Hervorragend in Szene gesetzt und voller Spiellaune unterstützte er die Protagonisten bestens.

Spannung kam auch von Luciano di Martino und den Philharmonikern Hamburg aus dem Graben. Nie zu laut oder hektisch, dennoch flott und nuancenreich wurde Verdi „zelebriert“.

Anlässlich hinter uns liegender Fußball Champions-Liga und bevorstehender WM war das das spannende Finale eines Sturmes (Solisten) und seiner Verteidigung (Chor) in einem eleganten ehrwürdigen Stadium (Bühne), trainiert von einem Top-Trainer (Dirigent). Und die Fans (Zuschauer) durften diese Truppe anfeuern (manchmal noch vor Ende der Szene). Leider gab es am Ende den Totalausfall des Mittelstürmers (Violetta). Ach ja, die blöde Fußballwelt!!.

Für alle Fans: auch in der nächsten Spielzeit wird es diese Traviata geben, wenn auch die Solisten wechseln. Sollte es dann mal die 275. oder gar 300. Aufführung geben, wir wollen dabei sein.

Di Martino’s successful Debut at Mariinsky Theatre

Luciano di Martino gave a successful debut at the famous Saint Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre. He has been working in Bulgaria for several years as permanent guest conductor of the Classic FM M-Tel Orchestra. Luciano di Martino was invited to conduct Verdi’s Attila production within the framework of the 18th edition of the Stars of the White Nights Festival. The Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra, the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, the pianists Arkadi Volodos and Yundi Li, the singers Nathalie Dessay, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Anna Netrebko, the actors Gerard Depardieu and John Malkovich, the conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen – these are only some of the celebrities lending prestige to the rich programme of the festival. The latter is organized by the artistic guidance of Valery Gergiev. Attila’s staging is set by the famous Mexican producer, working currently in Germany, Arturo Gamma. In the preparation process Di Martino worked with 4 separate casts of singers, the outstanding Russian performers Ildar Abdrazakov, Mariya Gulegina, Vadim Kravets, Sergey Skorohodov, Irina Gordey, Edem Umerov et al. being amongst them. The first two premieres were conducted by Valery Gergiev himself, whereas the third one — by Luciano di Martino.
“The overall level of the Stars of the White Nights Festival was exceptionally high,” says the conductor.
“The sound of the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra is incredibly well polished, and the musicians play with perfect synchronization and well-trained intonation.”
After his successful debut at the Festival, Di Martino will continue his work at the Mariinsky Theatre as an assistant to Valery Gergiev and guest conductor to the Italian operas. His next performances will be Verdi’s Don Carlos (2 October 2010), and again Attila (7 October 2010).

Anna Tomowa-Sintow Gala Concert

Tausende begeisterter Zuschauer erlebten im Dezember 2007 die erste Weihnachts-Gala der berühmten Sopranistin Anna Tomowa-Sintow im Nationalen Kulturpalast in Sofia. Begleitet vom Classic FM Orchester und dem Sofioter Knabenchor unter der Leitung von Luciano di Martino (Foto OBA) sang die beliebte Künstlerin Werke von Schubert, Bach/Gounod, Hristov, Frank, Adam und anderen. Diese Gala war das erste Weihnachtskonzert dieser Art in Bulgarien und wurde live im Fernsehen übertragen. - Fabian Stallknecht -

Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah

On 26 January soprano Marina Shaguch and tenor Alexander Timchenko will be performing the solo roles in Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijahfor the first time at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre under the baton of Luciano Di Martino.

Mendelssohn’s acclaimed oratorio, which the composer based on motifs of the Old Testament is performed extremely rarely in Russia. The premiere of the work in 1846 in Birmingham proved a veritable sensation and drew a delighted response from the audience. Despite the warm reception given to the premiere, the work was subsequently performed on relatively few occasions, although in scale this monumental choral work stands alongside such other works on Biblical themes as Bach’s Passions, Handel’s oratorios and Haydn and Beethoven’s Masses.

At the core of the work lies Elijah, one of the prophets in the Old Testament who protected humanity from natural disasters and saved the world from drought.

Soprano Marina Shaguch has made a name for herself as a performer of lead roles in operas by Russian composers. The singer also has a wealth of experience performing vocal roles in masses and cantatas by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. Alexander Timchenko, who represents the next generation of the Mariinsky Opera Company, has already been noted by the critics for the “nobility of his performances and the perfect technique of his vocals.”

The performance on 16 January will be conducted by the Italian maestro Luciano Di Martino, whose collaboration with the Mariinsky Theatre began at the Stars of the White Nights festival last season when he conducted Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Attila. Luciano Di Martino will also be conducting the premiere performances of Gaetano Donizetti’s opera L’elisir d’amore at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre on 24, 25 and 27 January and 8 February.
